First Trimester
The first trimester marks the beginning of your baby’s development — from fertilization to the formation of vital organs, limbs, and facial features. While you may experience symptoms like fatigue and nausea, this stage lays the foundation for everything to come.
Pregnancy officially begins before conception — starting with your period. In Weeks 1 and 2, your body is shedding last month’s uterine lining and gearing up for ovulation. While you’re not pregnant yet, this phase lays the groundwork for a healthy pregnancy ahead.
During the 3rd week, this marks the true beginning of pregnancy. If fertilization occurs, a single cell called a zygote forms and begins its journey toward implantation.
During the 4th week, the blastocyst settles into the uterine lining — and your pregnancy hormones begin to rise. It’s the week when many people get their first positive pregnancy test.
During the 5th week, your baby’s heart begins to form. The brain, spine, and tiny limb buds are also developing. Morning sickness begins along with breast tenderness.
During the 6th week, tiny dark spots are forming where the eyes will be and slowly facial features take form. Morning sickness intensifies with food aversions emerging.
During the 7th week, your baby’s brain is growing at an incredible pace this week. Meanwhile, your body is adapting to support this growth with changes like an expanding uterus and increased blood volume.
During the 8th week, your baby's fingers and toes begin to form. As your baby’s organs develop, you might notice a thickening waistline, peak morning sickness, and growing fatigue. This is also the time many begin prenatal checkups.
During the 9th week, your baby is starting to make small movements, and facial features are becoming more distinct. Meanwhile, your body is adjusting — with mood swings, skin changes, and a growing uterus all part of the journey.
During the 10th week, your baby is starting to form their external genitalia. Your body may start showing early signs of pregnancy as the uterus rises and morning sickness begins to ease.
During the 11th week, your baby is beginning to practice breathing movements and can even make tiny facial expressions. You may start to feel better — with more energy, a visible bump, and a few new symptoms as your body adapts.
During the 12th week, your baby is moving more than ever — stretching, kicking, and even developing reflexes. This marks the end of the first trimester. You may start feeling better physically as early symptoms ease.
