What Should I Do After a Dog Bite?
Wash the dog bite wound thoroughly with soap and running water right away. Then go to an animal bite center or clinic for assessment and anti-rabies vaccination. Don't wait for symptoms to appear.
Cleaning the wound is your first aid step after a dog bite. Washing the area well with soap and water helps flush out the rabies virus and other germs that can cause infection. Do this as soon as possible after the bite or scratch.
Next, book your animal bite service appointment and go to an animal bite center right away. A nurse or physician on-site will check your wound, ask about the animal and how the bite happened, and recommend the right treatment. This may include the anti-rabies vaccine and, for more severe bites, rabies immunoglobulin (RIG).
Even if you've had an anti-rabies vaccine before, you should still see a doctor. You may need booster doses for continued protection.
