🧾 Part 2: Understanding Your NIPT Results — What Happens Next?
August 7, 2025 • 4 MIN READ
You've taken the Non-Invasive Prenatal Test (NIPT)—now what?
Waiting for test results during pregnancy can feel stressful, but it helps to understand what the results mean and what to do next. Here's everything you need to know.
🧪 What Do NIPT Results Look Like?
NIPT results will fall into one of these general categories:
- Low Risk (Negative Result) This means that the test did not find signs of certain chromosomal conditions. It’s very unlikely your baby has the conditions screened for.
- High Risk (Positive Result) This means there’s a higher chance your baby has a specific chromosomal abnormality. It does not confirm a diagnosis—it’s a signal to do further testing.
- No Result or Inconclusive Sometimes, there isn’t enough fetal DNA in your blood to give a result. If this happens, your OB-GYN may recommend repeating the test.
📌 NIPT is a screening tool—not a final answer. It gives you and your doctor a clearer picture, but diagnostic tests are needed to confirm any condition.

🧠How Should I Interpret My Results?
Understanding your results can feel overwhelming, especially if they show a possible concern. It’s completely normal to have mixed emotions.
Here’s what you can do:
- Talk to your OB-GYN or genetic counselor to understand what your results mean for you and your baby.
- Remember that most people receive low-risk results.
Even if the result is high-risk, it’s not a diagnosis. Further testing can confirm or rule it out.

đź’¬ Tip: Mahalagang maintindihan na hindi ito final diagnosis. Kausapin agad ang OB-GYN mo para sa susunod na hakbang.
đź©» What Are the Next Steps After a High-Risk Result?
If your NIPT result comes back high-risk, your OB-GYN may suggest diagnostic tests that give a definitive answer:
- Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) Done between 10–13 weeks. Takes a small sample from the placenta.
- Amniocentesis Done after 15 weeks. Collects a small amount of amniotic fluid to examine the baby’s DNA.
Both procedures are more invasive but provide clear confirmation of whether your baby truly has a genetic condition.
⏳ How Long Do NIPT Results Take?
Most results are ready within 7 to 14 days, depending on the lab and location. Your OB-GYN will contact you once they receive your report.
❤️ Is It Worth Doing the Test?
Only you can answer that—but you don’t have to decide alone.
Some questions that can help:
- Will this information help me feel more prepared?
- Am I comfortable with the possibility of further testing?
- Would this knowledge help my doctor give the best care for my baby?
- How would I feel knowing early about a condition?
Every pregnancy is different, and so is every family’s decision.
