Everything You Need to Know About the Rabies Vaccine

July 4, 20253 MIN READ

Rabies is a preventable but serious disease caused by a virus that affects the nervous system. It is primarily transmitted to humans through bites or scratches from infected animals, such as dogs, cats, or bats. Timely vaccination is critical to avoid severe outcomes, and Hati Health makes it easier than ever to access the rabies vaccine. Here’s what you need to know about getting vaccinated.

When Should You Get the Rabies Vaccine?

The rabies vaccine is required in two scenarios:

  1. Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PreEP): If you are at high risk of coming into contact with rabies due to your profession or lifestyle—for example, veterinarians, animal handlers, or travelers visiting areas where rabies is common—you may need pre-exposure vaccination.
  2. Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP): If you are bitten, scratched, or exposed to potentially rabid animals, it is critical to get vaccinated as soon as possible. The post-exposure protocol should begin immediately to prevent the virus from taking hold.

Importance of the Rabies Vaccine

Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. The vaccine is the only effective way to prevent the disease from progressing. Here’s why it matters:

  • Life-Saving Protection: Vaccination eliminates the risk of developing rabies after exposure.
  • Peace of Mind: Pre-exposure vaccination protects you from accidental exposures, especially in areas where access to immediate care is limited.

Scheduling a Rabies Vaccination

The rabies vaccine schedule differs depending on whether you’re getting vaccinated before or after exposure:

  1. Pre-Exposure Vaccination:
    • A series of three “3” doses given on days 0, 7, and 21 or 28.
    • Boosters may be required for ongoing risk.
  2. Post-Exposure Vaccination:
    • For individuals not previously vaccinated: Four doses administered on days 0, 3, 7, and 14, along with rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) on day 0.
    • For individuals previously vaccinated: Two doses on days 0 and 3, with no need for RIG.

Hati Health is not an emergency service. For post-exposure prophylaxis, please ensure you seek immediate medical attention

You may book your appointment through Hati Health for timely care. The number of shots required depends on whether it is pre-exposure (three doses) or post-exposure (two to four doses based on prior vaccination status).
