Testosterone

The Testosterone test measures the level of testosterone, a key hormone involved in the development of male reproductive tissues and the maintenance of male secondary sexual characteristics, though it is also important in women for bone health and metabolism. The test is typically performed by drawing a blood sample, which is then analyzed in a laboratory to assess the total amount of testosterone in the bloodstream. This test is commonly used to diagnose conditions related to abnormal testosterone levels, such as low testosterone (hypogonadism) in men, which can cause symptoms like fatigue, reduced libido, and muscle loss, or elevated testosterone in women, which can lead to symptoms like excessive hair growth or menstrual irregularities. It is typically administered when these symptoms are present, or during the evaluation of infertility, erectile dysfunction, or other hormonal imbalances.
