Prolactin
The Prolactin test measures the level of prolactin, a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that plays a key role in regulating milk production in women, as well as influencing reproductive health in both men and women. The test is typically done by drawing a blood sample, which is then analyzed to determine the prolactin level. It is used to diagnose conditions such as hyperprolactinemia (elevated prolactin levels), which can cause symptoms like irregular menstrual cycles, infertility, and galactorrhea (unexpected milk production) in women, and erectile dysfunction or infertility in men. The test is often administered when these symptoms are present or when a doctor suspects pituitary dysfunction, tumors (such as prolactinomas), or issues related to lactation. Prolactin testing may also be used to monitor individuals with known pituitary disorders or to investigate unexplained reproductive health concerns.
